Your Monthly Guide: October
WATCH OUT:
-
Keep an eye out for pigeons and white fly on brassicas
-
Fix any wind damage on tall brassicas like sprouts. They should have been stalked earlier in the year.
TO DO LIST:
-
Feed winter cabbages with a quick acting liquid or granular/pelleted feed.
-
Do you have lots of compostable material? If so, dig a trench where next year’s peas or beans will grow and fill the trench with compost and vegetable kitchen waste. Then cover with soil and watch the plants grow!
-
Keep cleaning spent and dying plant material off the plot.
-
Keep grass paths and edges cut. You don’t know when you will be able to cut them again.
WHAT SHOULD YOU SOW NOW?
-
Sweet peas
-
Broad beans
-
Winter lettuce
-
Plant garlic
-
Round seeded peas.
Septmeber and October are the start of the new gardening year and what you do in terms of cleaning and preparing will stand you in good stead for the planting year ahead.
