Your Monthly Guide: July
WATCH OUT:
-
Especially in July when the weather is meant to get significantly warmer, make sure you keep your eyes peeled for pests, once spotted make sure you treat them accordingly to get rid of them quickly. Aphids proliferate on new growth and can decimate plants over a short period of time.
-
Also look out for the tell-tale signs of blight, a crop killer! The signs are brown, sunken spots on leaves. As soon as you spot blight, act fast, and spray with Bordeaux mixture to delay the spread.
TO DO LIST:
-
Keep on top of weeds. By doing this you won’t let the weeds take up the water and nutrients from the soil, which is meant for your plants.
-
Tie in your tomato plants and remove all side shoots on cordon tomatoes to make sure they grow upwards. And ensure that climbing beans and tall peas are properly supported.
-
Lift garlic and shallot plants that have finished growing, then lay them out in the sun to dry.
-
Harvest your currants to ensure you get them whilst they are ripe and fresh.
-
Finish planting your winter veg, like winter cabbage, summer cabbage, autumn broccoli, kale and cauliflower.
-
Sow your autumn/winter bedding e.g. Wallflowers and Sweet William.
-
Don’t forget to feed your fruit and veg.
