WATCH OUT:

 

  • Dry plants and ground which may need watering

  • Slugs and snails becoming more active now.

TO DO LIST:

 

  • Fertilise beds and borders with a general purpose fertiliser

  • Dead head spring flowering plants

  • Plant second early and main crop potatoes

  • Plant out early sown summer cabbage, broccoli and peaks

  • Keep weeds under control

  • Protect fruit blossom from late frosts

  • Ventilate greenhouses

  • Plant lily bulbs

  • Fork in a 5cm layer of compost, well-rotted manure or green waste into beds in preparation for the growing season.

WHAT SHOULD YOU SOW NOW?

 

  • Squash

  • Beans

  • Celery

  • Celeriac

  • Early sweetcorn

  • Sprouting broccoli

  • Beetroot

  • Carrots

  • Chard

  • Leeks

  • Lettuce

  • Peas

  • Turnips

  • Parsnips

  • Hardy annuals e.g. marigold, sunflowers, cornflowers, put these directly into beds.

  • Half-hardy annuals e.g. petunias and lobelia, but put these undercover.

Spring is in full flow now. The longer sunny days make for fine gardening weather.
